Greetings Folks!

Many of you have noticed some updates around WDC. (If you follow my notebook updates, you've seen a few of them there.) Here's some info on the visible and not so visible "new stuff"!

We updated the review area of items a few days ago to put more of a focus on the review side of things. It also needed a fresh look after having been essentially the same for over a decade. And after gathering a bunch of feedback, the new floating Review this item tab starts just below the item header area and then floats up to the top of the screen. Yesterday, we added to this is a new window icon () which launches the review tool pop-up, all ready to review the current item.

And, while we're working on some other bigger changes related to images, I tossed in a few other minor but excitingly useful updates. Least interesting is that the "Edit" screen for Image Items now shows you the image you're editing (and its dimensions) in the area where you can upload a new one. This is a big convenience factor update for those who work on images often.

The addition of image scaling to the WritingML image tag is a useful update. You can now scale an image item like this: {image:######-NN%} where the NN is a scaling factor percentage, from 1 to 100. Here's a side by side example of an image and then two scaled counterparts...

{image:1434340} *Right* {image:1434340-63%} *Right* {image:1434340-35%}

Our cat Ben. (Photo copied from SMs's portfolio.) *Right* Our cat Ben. (Photo copied from SMs's portfolio.) *Right* Our cat Ben. (Photo copied from SMs's portfolio.)

It even works with animated images...
Smilely image... *Right* Smilely image... *Right* Smilely image... *Right* Smilely image...

And, yes! The documentation on scaling has been added to the WritingML help system: WritingML Help

That's all for now, but there's more to come!

Cool smiley ... Write on,
~~SM

Greetings Folks!

... A quick note that we're A-OK out here in PA ... But there's no power and all forms of cell, phone and internet are out making it really hard to get online. Ventured out today and drove around till we found a spot with cell 'net access to check in and get a quick post out.

Writing.Com's web hosting provider is also located in our area of PA, but they have huge generator capacity and rock solid connections to the internet via various teleco utilities. They've been running off their backup generators for 2 days and have a new "primary power" generator coming online tonight. They're ability to handle this type of event is exactly why we chose them as our hosting provider over a decade ago.

Our thoughts and wishes are with everyone hit by Sandy -- good luck and stay safe!

[UPDATE: We received power and internet service back on Friday 11/2!]

Best wishes,
~~SM

Greetings Members!

We finally have the winners from our 12th Birthday contest, "Limericks! Limericks! Limericks! We're sorry it took so long, but there were a record 49 entries and, as much as anyone loves limericks, that's a lot of them to read, meter and weigh against one another to pick a few final winners.

After much deliberation, here's the top 3 plus 1 honorable mention:

1st Place: ßlueyeʐ
"Reflections

I was checking out faces one day
as I dined in a crowded cafe.
A strange woman I spied
who was dining outside,
wore her curls in complete disarray.

I then laughed to myself and chastised —
what a fool — such disgrace — I'm surprised.
When I looked back to see,
she was looking at me,
with a smirk that I soon recognized.

At the window's reflection I stared
with a look of disgust we both shared.
For we two were the same —
I'm that crazy ol' dame
who'd forgotten to brush her own hair.

2nd Place: ♥Hooves♥
My Boo

My Basset Hound lies in the sun,
She's six but she's done that since one.
Her dog chow awaits,
She hastens her gait,
But her legs are too short for a run.

My Basset Hound swallows, then chews.
Three helpings are better than two.
When dividing the cup,
Remember the pup
Needs to keep her pounds down to a few.

3rd Place: hopelesslyoptm
"Invalid Item

I remembered my very first kiss,
The one with the sweetheart I missed.
On Facebook I traced her,
And exchanged some banter.
Said reunion with her would be bliss.

An email said Tanya agreed,
And suggested we go for Chinese.
To meet over a meal,
It seemed so unreal!
"You won't recognize me," she teased.

I walked into the Chinese at two,
And searched for that young girl I knew.
But she wasn't there,
And I had to stare,
When I found out 'her' new name was Stu!

Honorable Mention: Asferthecat
A pirate Captain called Hugh
Had only one eye and not two.
When his crew said Aye, aye.
He replied with a sigh
"Dont remind me that Im pas de deux."

Thanks to everyone who answered; we hope you all had fun writing your limericks!

Best wishes,
~~SM & SMs
