Greets,

In April, a member emailed us noting that our "Most Viewed" sorting was not actually sorting results correctly. Indeed, when we looked into this, we found it was the result of changes we made to increase the site's speed and performance a few months earlier. Unable to find a viable solution at that time, we removed the sorting option until we could make it work right and work fast.

(For those interested in the "technical" reasoning.... Because the view count is updated very often, while the rest of the item's data is not, in our database backend, we moved the "view count" field from the main item table into its own view table. This simple change removed a bunch of system overhead each time an item is viewed on the site... which is often. *Wink*)

We finally devised a way to quickly sum both the old and new view count data and perform a sort on it in a way that doesn't make the item listing sort time unbearably slow. As such, Most Viewed sorting has returned to the item listings!

Enjoy!

Recycling Bin Moves To Upgraded Membership
We're pleased to announce that use of the Recycling Bin is now a standard part of Writing.Com's Upgraded Membership. This feature, which was previously available only to Premium Membership+, catches all items deleted from one's portfolio and hangs onto them.

Items can be restored from the Recycling Bin simply by moving them out and back into your portfolio. This should cut down on some of the "Oops" moments our members have had.

Items in your Recycling Bin do still count towards your item totals. You can, however, instantly purge your recycling bin at any time by clicking the Purge Recycling Bin link on your My Portfolio page.

New Features for In & Out Items
In & Outs are one of the most flexible item types on Writing.Com. We've made the following improvements to make them even more useful:

*Bullet* Direct Follow Ups: This new setting determines whether posters to the In & Out may make multiple posts in immediate succession. If this is set to Disallow, once a member posts to the In & Out, they will have to wait until at least one other person posts before they may post again. This setting defaults to "Allow" where no additional posting restrictions are imposed.

*Bullet* Post Limiting: This setting determines how often a member may post to an In & Out. If a limit is specified, members will not be able to add another post if they already have that number of posts showing within the In & Out.

*Bullet* Self Deletion: This setting determines whether posters to the In & Out may delete their own
submissions.

*Bullet* Duplicate Item Check: In the Require Item IDs setting, In & Out owners can ensure that each item may only be posted once per page of entries.

*Bullet* Submission Message Area: This section allows you to create a custom message to leave just above the form where members can submit to your In & Out. This message is limited to 5,000 characters and can be used to remind your posters or rules, wish them luck, give them examples, etc.

We missed sending out the reminder email at the beginning of the month, so "Quotation Inspiration: Official Contest currently has only 11 entries. There's still about a week left to get your entry in!

Greetings Members!

First and foremost, this new feature is for members with a Premium Membership or above. Please, no hate mail that I made you read the whole announcement and didn't tell you it was a Premium Membership feature. *Smile*

This is an "unofficial" announcement that we're opening up a beta testing on our newest feature:

         My Inkspot @ InkSpot.Com

Members can now activate a "copy" of their portfolio at @ InkSpot.Com. The system's setup process is available within your My Portfolio -> Settings area. Once there, you'll see the link for My InkSpot.Com Setup.

The setup process allows beginners a quick and easy setup, while allowing members with more knowledge of HTML and website design the ability to further customize their InkSpot.

For en example, I've setup My InkSpot:
          http://www.InkSpot.Com/authors/storymaster

Writing.Com is filled with tools and links, InkSpot.Com is your "Spot" - well, "InkSpot". Consider Writing.Com your back office to your InkSpot.Com front-end space.

Member account on InkSpot.Com are interchangeable with those on Writing.Com.
That means that access restrictions work between sites, groups included! And, if you have a forum on Writing.Com that's accessible by a passkey, it'll work just as well on InkSpot.Com.

Item tags, user tags, etc all work the same. If there's a link to an item or a user on InkSpot.Com that whom has not activated their InkSpot (either by choice or by membership restriction), that link will bounce right over to Writing.Com.

We're opening this early on in the testing process so members can experiment with the styling options available and let us know what they'd like to see in the future.

We'll be adding plenty more features, including the ability to choose whether items are accessible on just Writing.Com, just InkSpot.Com or both!

At this point, rating and reviewing are non-functional and there is really no means to get feedback from your InkSpot unless you add an email link to any of your HTML areas.

Blogs do not show calendars, links, etc. We'll fix that and they will.

I am excited to see how our members use this new innovation from Writing.Com... and we look forward to providing more tools in the future!

Best wishes,
~~SM

New: My Portfolio "Tools" Tab
The recent upgrades to Writing.Com's "My Portfolio" area included an "Info" tab. This tab has now been renamed to Tools and provides better linking to the many tools available for managing your Writing.Com portfolio.

The tools linked from this area include:

*Bullet* Export Portfolio: Download the contents of your portfolio.
*Bullet* Item Edit Logs: A new tool to track changes to your items.
*Bullet* Item Summary: The info provided on the old "Info" tab.
*Bullet* Manage Auto-Rewards: View and update your Auto-Rewards from one page.
*Bullet* Manage Item Aliases: Create, edit or transfer Item Aliases.
*Bullet* Manage Passkeys: View and update all the Passkeys on your items.
*Bullet* Summary Stats: An overview of your item statistics.

Most of these areas are still linked from other navigation menus. Creating this new "My Portfolio" tab allows us to keep them in an extra convenient location.

New Tool: Item Edit Logs
Linked from the new Tools tab of your My Portfolio area, this log stores all data from Item Edits. Available to all members, (with any level of membership), Item Edit Logs can be viewed by both item owners as well as members with Group Edit Access to a particular item.

Log entries for each edit list all the details and settings at time of edit completion. This information includes the item's title, description, access restrictions, passkey, auto-reward amount and much more.

The edit log is a handy tool for groups using our Group Edit Access feature. The log shows members of the group with edit access who's edited an item, when and all the details as stored by the edit. To view the log of a group edit item, visit your own "Item Edit Logs" page and enter the item ID in the form field found just below your logs.

A few important notes:
Member accessible "Item Edit" logs began storing data on July 6th, 2008. Edit logs do not include changes to an Item's main content as that is provided to Premium+ Members via the RCS feature linked from their items.

New: New Window Icons
As you may have noticed... We've been adding "New Window" icons to the various WritingML links and areas throughout Writing.Com. This change allows everyone to choose for themselves whether to open their links in the same window (by clicking on the text) or in a new window (by clicking on the icon). We'll be adding these icons to more areas as time goes on.

Update: Review Return Mail and cNote Replies
The review system's "Return Mail" feature, which allows members to reply to a review within the review email, has been updated with better integration into the new email system. Replying to a review now stays within the same window and acts as a normal email reply. The review email is marked as "Replied To" and a copy of the reply is stored in your email Sent-Mail folder.

The same is now true for replies to cNotes through the cNote reply form. Rather than be emailed a copy and confirmation of your reply, the cNote is marked as "Replied To" and a copy of your response is stored in your email Sent-Mail folder.
